Gretchen C. Avery is a Kentucky native, having grown up in Northern Kentucky.
Avery graduated from the University of Louisville in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree
in History. She earned her law degree from the University of Louisville Louis D.
Brandeis School of Law. Avery began her legal career at the Legal Aid Society in
Louisville, providing civil legal services to low-income clients otherwise unable to

own private practice, which focuses on the broad range of domestic relations
issues. Avery serves as a Court appointed counsel in Jefferson County Family
Court’s Dependency, Abuse and Neglect docket. Her practice also includes legal
representation and advice on landlord and tenant issues. In addition to her legal
practice, Avery is engaged in numerous civic and charitable causes and serves as a
member of the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization MothersEsquire.
Avery is the 2023 President of the Louisville Bar Foundation and has served on
that board since 2017.
